Can Biotin Cause Acne?
Biotin is all the rage for helping to grow our hair and nails thicker and stronger.
In the fall, my esthy friend & I partnered up with a client to help her acne and we both watched her skin clear up within weeks after she stopped using Biotin.
Until that client, I never even knew that was a trigger for problem skin.
Supplements are great and have their purpose, but they can also trigger other problems and concerns in our skin that we might not even be aware of.
With Acne being such a tricky skin condition to clear up, I have to make it my job to be aware of any possible triggers that can be causing more harm to my client’s skin than good.
What is Biotin?
Biotin is a B7 vitamin and part of the B complex vitamins responsible for metabolism, nerves, digestive and cardio functions.
When we eat foods high in Vitamin B7, the Biotin converts & uses the macronutrients for energy and bodily functions.
Biotin also plays a major role in strengthening our hair follicles and nail beds.
It has become the go-to vitamin for helping to treat these concerns in a lot of people.
Let’s go on to understand how it causes acne…
Biotin and the Skin
A few months ago, I took my kids to get their haircut from my sister. The owner, my sister & her client were having a discussion about Biotin to help this client thicken her hair.
Of course I had to pipe in & explain to all of them that Biotin is not as good as it seems and can cause skin problems, such as acne.
I don’t always open my mouth, but this client just happened to have a few breakouts & I knew that I could help her by speaking up & explaining why.
Biotin Strengthens the Hair Follicles
Biotin DOES a great job at thickening the hair at the follicle. This is awesome for women with thin or thinning hair.
We always need to remember that everything we put into our bodies ends up affecting the skin. Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies, and is a detox organ. This means that what we put into our bodies affects our other organs, but also what doesn’t get processed through our organs, gets released through our skin via the pores.
Every single pore in our skin is connected to a hair follicle. And if we take Biotin, it thickens our hair follicles, guess what it’s doing to our pores?
Clogging them up OR plugging them up so the oil gets trapped and stuck like a plug.
We are basically suffocating our pores by thickening the hair follicle because it takes over the entire pore.
The end result = Acne!
Please know that not everyone who uses Biotin will be affected by acne, but if you happen to be taking Biotin and are breaking out, give it a break & see if you notice any changes in your skin.
You all know how much I love to help people and if I can gift someone clear skin by helping them, I’ve done my job and feel absolute peace in my heart.
Please share this email with friends & family that you know might be having a problem from a Biotin supplement.
