For the past 15 years, I’ve been lucky to get my hands on the best of the best when it comes to skin care products.
And I have used a LOT of different lines over the years.
But my skin is STILL far from perfect.
I still fight those occasional acne breakouts and as I approach 40, all those years of swimming at my grandparents pool sans sunscreen is finally showing it’s ugly head in the form of melasma all over my cheeks & forehead.
Oh, did I mention that I’m also seeing fine lines, wrinkles & sagging skin appearing?
Yep, even estheticians struggle with skin problems. I am human after all.
Let’s go back to the early years, so you can really understand why my skin isn’t that great…
Growing up, my grandparents had a pool in their backyard and we practically lived there all summer long. I have olive skin & tanned very easily. My thought was, “Who needs sunscreen if you don’t burn”?
The only time I actually USED sunscreen as a child & teenager was when we vacationed in Mexico & Florida, because the sun was stronger. I still got a few nasty burns over the years.
I was one of those one & done SPF type of girls. I would apply initially when we got to the pool or beach, and that’s it for the day.
I have to be completely honest, I absolutely HATE the feeling of sunscreen on my body and would do anything to NOT put it on.
But knowing what I know, I bite the bullet & put that icky stuff on.
On a positive note, I’m lucky that my mom never let my sisters and I do tanning beds, which I am now grateful for. I at least have that going for me.
I have gone to bed many nights in my early 20’s without washing my face. THAT was when I was either out partying or bartending at night & you could still smoke in the bar. I did this for about 4-years.
Not washing your face at night causes premature wrinkles; I’ve been fighting those for quite a few years via multiple serums.
I did tons of peels & microdermabrasion treatments for the first 5-6 years of being an esthetician. These treatments cause surface inflammation and damage the skin over time because it thins the skin’s barrier.
I even used Retinols to “prevent wrinkles” – I put that in quotes because I was only 23 when I did this, thinking that I was going to get wrinkles that young.
That damned Acne curse
Yep, I even had acne!
On and off for 7 years.
I was one of the blessed teens that didn’t have acne, only the occasional zit.
So I was in shock when I developed acne in my 20’s after coming off birth control. I blamed it on hormones. Every time I was pregnant (have 3 kids) and nursing, my skin was clear.
As soon as I stopped nursing, my acne came back. This went on for about 7 years.
When my daughter Zoe was about 9mos old, I was struggling to lose the last few baby pounds, so I did a 14-day cleanse.
Here’s the shocker…
In less than 2 weeks my skin COMPLETELY cleared up! Yep I said that right.
I eliminated all inflammatory foods from my diet and now I know if I consume too much dairy and/or sugar, guess what nasty thing pops up on my cheeks?
A nasty zit!
From then on, I have made it my mission to empower my clients that what we eat & put into our bodies DOES affect our skin.
Why am I sharing all this with you?
The first thing I want you to know is that no matter what damage you’ve accumulated on your skin over the years, it’s ok!
It’s never too late to start taking control of your skin.
No matter what age, there are ways to get your skin back to a healthy state, where your skin becomes clear, less wrinkled and glowing.
My wish for you is that you start to achieve your skin care goals, because you deserve to look your absolute best. When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, your confidence builds and you are able to take on those life challenges you never thought possible.
How can you get started?
First you need to understand how your skin functions. You can find all of this knowledge in my book, Skin Deep: Demystifying Skin Care Solutions to Achieve Healthy, Glowing Skin
Once you understand the basics of your skin & how it functions, then you’ll be able to select your skin care products that will work for your specific skin’s needs.
Using the right skin care products makes all the difference. One thing I really stress to my clients that see me for regular facials, is that I can only do so much during their 60-minute treatment. What really impacts their skin is what they are doing both morning & night that will determine the ultimate results.
Your second option is to find a trusted esthetician that can do a thorough skin evaluation and can provide you with a customized home care program that will target all your skin’s needs.
Many estheticians get a bad rap, but we actually have the heads up in this whole product concept. We are trained to understand the biology of the skin and the chemistry of products.
Our knowledge of the science of the skin will help YOU because we can completely customize your home care and make it work for you each season of the year and season of life.
You’ll end up saving time & money because you won’t be wasting money on products that don’t work for your skin.
If your home care is customized, then you ONLY have products & steps that you need.
When the products deliver results, you stick to that line!
Thank you for reading & allowing me to share my passion of skin with you!
