How our skin changes in the spring

Happy Spring!

Did you know it takes 10 days for our skin to adjust to a new temperature? I live in Chicago, and we can go from 60 degrees to 20 degrees in a matter of hours. This is why our skin freaks out! As the weather shifts around, our skin doesn’t know what temperature to adjust to.

During the spring month, I notice many skin issues happening to clients in the spring months. The most common are, acne flare-ups, really dry or really oily skin, or an increase in skin sensitivity. My best piece of advice, be patient and know that your skin will normalize once the weather stays consistent!

We are heading toward the summer months, in the month of April I reassess client’s skin and readjust their skincare products to match the warm months ahead. Since we live in Chicago, our winters are cold and dry, and our summers are hot and humid. We can’t use the same skincare products for winter and summer, because what works for your skin in the winter is not going to work for your skin in the summer.

The benefit of having an esthetician is to understand the seasonal changes, assess your skin, and shift your skincare products around to match each season. For example, I may take a client from an oil-based or cream-based cleanser to a gel cleanser. A heavier night moisturizer to a lotion (a lotion is a light moisturizer), and facial oils may not be necessary during the summer months.

I’m not saying to run out and change all your products right now. When assessing clients, I understand what works for each client and this doesn’t apply to everybody. It depends on the client’s skin type and what season of life they are in. If I have a dry client, I may keep them in their cream cleanser during the summer months, but this is an individualized decision.

The problem with social media and everyone now is a “skin expert” means we buy products because someone told us this is the best line or the influencers have perfect skin which you are striving for! They are NOT skin experts and they don’t understand how the skin works. Their end goal is to sell you products. THAT’S IT!

I could do the same thing, but I’m not! I understand the skin, how it works, and what each individual client needs for their skin during that facial appointment, and I readjust accordingly. You’re not going to find that on TikTok or YouTube!

Another benefit of having an esthetician is we help you save time and money on skincare products, because we understand the skin and know what’s best for your skin. We send you home with skincare products to support your skin in the summer months. If you don’t have an esthetician, I highly recommend you find one. If you don’t live in the Chicagoland area, I’m happy to help find an esthetician in your area.
