Dermaplaning Explained
Dermaplaning: Why Your Skin Deserves This Incredible Treatment
Let us take the guesswork out of dermaplaning, this popular skin treatment that removes dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving you with radiant skin just in time for fall!
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive facial treatment that uses a surgical-grade scalpel to remove dead skin and peach fuzz. This deep exfoliation treatment leaves your skin fresh and smooth, allowing deeper product penetration. If you wear makeup, your makeup will go on smoothly and look airbrushed! This treatment is perfect for our Brides-to-be because they will glow on their wedding day!
Is Dermaplaning safe?
Yes! When Dermaplaning is performed by a licensed, trained professional, it is a safe treatment. At Skin Deep Esthetics, we learned a special technique to ensure safety and effectiveness for our clients.
Will My Hair Grow Back Darker?
No! Dermaplaning doesn’t change the thickness or color of your facial hair. Hormonal shifts in the body cause dark hair to grow. There are two types of facial hair: vellus hair and terminal hair (see previous blog)
Who Can Have Dermaplaning Treatments?
Dermaplane is safe for most people. The only time we don’t recommend this treatment is if you have active acne, skin cancer, active cold sores, have used Accutane within 6 months, or have any skin inflammation/open wounds. According to AmSpa, “Dermaplaning may be an attractive option for those seeking to improve the tone and texture of their skin, or remove deep scars from acne without the possibility of irritation from chemical peels and the expense of laser skin resurfacing. Although no treatment can fully eliminate all scars or flaws, dermaplaning typically produces excellent results.”
How Often Should You Dermaplane?
Monthly treatments are ideal. Your skin’s cell turnover slows as you age – in young skin, it occurs every 28 days. Monthly dermaplane treatments help reset that cycle. Promoting healthier, younger-looking skin, less acne scarring, even skin tone, and overall skin radiance.
Is Dermaplaning The Same as Exfoliation?
Yes, Dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation – but taken to the next level. It involves a surgical scalpel to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells and fine facial hair. The result? A smooth surface and better absorption of skincare products.
Can I Dermaplane If I Have Acne or Breakouts?
This depends on the severity of your acne. We can work around a few breakouts, but if you have more severe acne, we recommend a series of our BioRePeel, acne facials, and Blue Light Therapy to calm your acne before starting dermaplaning.
Can Dermaplaning Cause Acne?
In some cases, dermaplaning can cause breakouts, especially if you’re prone to acne. If you do have underlying acne, a dermaplane treatment may cause the skin to purge. However, most clients have no issues with post-treatment acne, and many find their breakouts improve over time!
Can I Use Retinol With Dermaplaning?
Both stimulate cell turnover, and when combined, can cause too much exfoliation, dryness, or irritation. We recommend stopping retinol one week before your appointment. Wait one week before resuming use. And make sure to always wear sunscreen – both retinol and dermaplaning increase sun sensitivity.
Dermaplaning: At Home vs. Professional
Many clients ask about at-home dermaplane blades; however, they’re not the same as what we offer in the spa. At-home blades are more like razors that can’t exfoliate like you would with a professional scalpel. Plus, they can spread bacteria and are known to cause breakouts. Our recommendation: leave the deep exfoliation to the pros!
Dermaplaning Benefits
Dermaplaning stimulates cell turnover. If you’ve read our previous blogs, you know that cell turnover slows down as we age. This leads to wrinkles, large pores, textured skin, and dull-looking skin. Regular dermaplane treatments put your skin back on a normal cell cycle, thus helping reduce the appearance of aging. After one treatment, you’ll notice a glow to your skin, your skin will look younger, and your products will penetrate better. Plus, your skin will feel soft like a baby!
Pre & Post Treatment Care
How you care for your skin before and after dermaplaning is key to great results!
1 week before Dermaplaning:
- Stop using retinol and acids such as AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), Salicylic acid, and Vitamin C
- Avoid scrubs or mechanical exfoliants
- Avoid sun exposure
1 week after Dermaplaning:
- Avoid retinol, acids, and Vitamin C
- No exfoliation
- Use a gentle cleanser morning and night
- Apply hydrating serums morning and night
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours – no exceptions!
