Skin Streaming: The New Skincare Trend
Simple skincare is back, and there’s a new trend called Skin Streaming, which has been gaining popularity this year. Consumers are moving away from complicated routines and returning to a simplified skincare routine that focuses on results rather than excess products. Interestingly, this concept isn’t entirely new. Last year, we wrote a blog about this exact topic, however, it was called Skinimalism. This just goes to show you that consumers do want to get away from the 17 step routine, the beauty industry just has to get creative with marketing to promote this trend. As an esthetician, it’s nice to see a trend back to simplicity. So what makes this year’s simple skincare trend different? Let’s dig in.
What is Skin Streaming?
Skin streaming is a viral TikTok term that means simplifying your skincare routine. And I have to agree with this because simple is better when it comes to skincare. According to BeautyBio, “Set to be one of this year’s biggest trends, skin streaming is all about embracing the “less is more” life mantra. It’s ditching your 10-step skincare routine and swapping it for a more simplified version made up of three or four essential products to address your skin’s specific concerns.”
Skin Streaming vs. Skin Flooding
Many confuse skin streaming with skin flooding, but they are completely different ideas when it comes to skincare.
Skin streaming is simplifying your routine to a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and SPF. Vogue Magazine says, “‘Skin streaming’ is all about streamlining your routine with a tight curation of products that address multiple needs.”
Skin flooding is exactly what it sounds like; layering multiple products in a multi-step routine. Vogue Magazine states that, ”’Skin flooding’ calls for a layering of products (particularly those featuring hyaluronic acid) beginning with mists and serums and rounding out with an emollient moisturizer for maximum hydration.”
The “Lazy Girl” Approach
In the world of skin influencers and multi-step routines, this type of skincare is considered the “lazy girl approach”. I disagree, because as an esthetician with over 20 years experience, we need to remember that our skin is an organ and it responds to its environment. When we are constantly bombarding our skin with layers upon layers of serums and moisturizers, the skin gets overwhelmed. I like to tell clients that your job with skincare is to support your skin. You can call it lazy, but I call it smart! Simple is what will make your skin really thrive.
5 Key Benefits of Simplifying your Skincare Routine
Saves you Money: When you streamline your skincare routine, you invest in products that actually work, rather than wasting money on impulse buys and countless products to be layered on top of each other.
Saves you Time: Let’s be honest, who has time for a 10+ step skincare routine every single day? I sure don’t! Simplifying means less hassle and fits into your busy schedule.
Better Skin Results: A targeted approach ensures your skin gets exactly what it needs without all the fluff. Removing excess products can actually help your skin respond better to the products that matter.
Less Skin Irritation: Using too many products increases your risk of skin sensitivity. Narrowing down your routine reduces the chance of breakouts, redness, and inflammation.
Improves Consistency: The biggest reason why most people struggle with their skin is because they don’t stick to a consistent routine. When your skincare routine is simple, it’s easier to be consistent.
Skin Streaming Skincare Products
Simplicity is key. The top recommended skincare products are a daily cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and SPF. For different skin types we do recommend specific products for each skin type. Here is our list of recommended skincare products:
Facial Cleansers
Our top favorite facial cleansers for normal/combination, dry, or sensitive skin are cream cleansers and oil cleansers. For combination, oily, or acne-prone skin, we like our light gel cleanser.
Serums
When it comes to serums, our top picks are ones that combine active ingredients so you don’t need multiple serums. Our favorite blended serums are our peptide serum that contains peptides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C. Our antiaging serum contains bakuchiol and vitamin C and is a great nighttime serum. If you have dry skin, we do recommend a hyaluronic serum to help your skin hold hydration and is a great morning serum. For brightening, we love our blended Vitamin C serum that contains vitamin C, peptides, and hyaluronic acid and is a great morning serum.
Moisturizers
Moisturizers lock water in and prevent the skin barrier from losing water through evaporation. We do have a variety of moisturizers for different skin types. We have a great dry skin moisturizer for dry or dehydrated skin. For our sensitive, combination, or normal skin types, we love the sensitive skin cream which is thick but doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. Lastly for our oily, combination, or acne-prone skin, we have a lightweight moisturizer that hydrates, calms and doesn’t clog the pores.
